چکیده

The use of a pulsed fibre laser as an excitation source for photoacoustic tomography has been investigated. Fibre lasers have the advantage of being compact, robust and efficient compared to traditional excitation sources used for photoacoustic tomography (e.g. Q-switched Nd:YAG pumped OPO or dye systems). Their high pulse repetition frequencies and adjustable pulse duration, shape and duty cycle also enables a wide range of time and frequency domain excitation methods to be investigated. A 1060nm, 20W fibre laser was used to generate acoustic waves in a tissue mimicking phantom composed of blood filled tubes immersed in a 1% solution of intralipid (μ’s=1mm ) . The laser was then combined with a Fabry Perot photoacoustic imaging system to obtain 3D images of a tissue mimicking phantom and an in vivo image of the vasculature of the palm of a volunteer. This study has demonstrated that pulsed fibre lasers have potential application as an excitation source for photoacoustic imaging of superficial blood vessels.

The advantage of using a diode laser instead of a Q-switched laser in photoacoustic imaging of tissues

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging of biological tissues using laser diodes instead of conventional Q switched pulsed systems provides an attractive alternative for biomedical applications. However, the relatively low energy of laser diodes operating in the pulsed regime, results in generation of very weak acoustic waves, and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the detected signals. This problem can be ...

Dual wavelength laser diode excitation source for 2D photoacoustic imaging

Photoacoustic methods can be used to make spatially resolved spectroscopic measurements of blood oxygenation when using a multiwavelength excitation source, such as an OPO system. Since these excitation sources are usually expensive and bulky, an alternative is to use laser diodes. A fibre coupled laser diode excitation system has been developed, providing two wavelengths, 850 and 905nm, each c...

Design and Application of a Photoacoustic Sensor for Monitoring the Laser Generated Stress Waves in Optical Fiber

Measurement of stress transients generated by a 400ns pulsed HF laser in an infrared fluoride glass fiber has been made using fast time – response piezoelectric film transducer. Acoustic signals up to 12 mV with frequencies ranging in megahertz generated by 21 mJ laser pulse when passed through the fiber axis in the linear region. It is shown that useful information such as onset of non - linea...

Generating photoacoustic signals using high-peak power pulsed laser diodes

Photoacoustic signals are usually generated using bulky and expensive Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers, with limited scope for varying the pulse repetition frequency, wavelength and pulse width. An alternative would be to use laser diodes as excitation sources; these devices are compact, relatively inexpensive, and available in a wide variety of NIR wavelengths. Their pulse duration and repetition rate...

High frame rate photoacoustic imaging at 7000 frames per second using clinical ultrasound system.

Photoacoustic tomography, a hybrid imaging modality combining optical and ultrasound imaging, is gaining attention in the field of medical imaging. Typically, a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is used to excite the tissue and generate photoacoustic signals. But, such photoacoustic imaging systems are difficult to translate into clinical applications owing to their high cost, bulky size often requiring ...
